Women & the Art Market: Observations from a Woman Art Lawyer
Join Vignette at The Cedars Union for a discussion with arts lawyer Sammetria Goodson about challenges faced by women-identifying artists as they navigate the Art market. Attendees will learn about the connection between intellectual property and multiple income streams, including an overview of copyright and fair use. Topics of discussion will also include observations gleaned from Sammetria’s practice regarding contract negotiations, managing relationships, and starting (and running) art businesses with spouse/partners. Sammetria has walked alongside many women as they navigate the art market – come learn about pathways to a more equitable art world. Light bites and refreshments will be provided. Event begins at 6:00pm, lecture will run from 6:15-7:15pm, Q&A from 7:15-7:30pm, brief tour of the studio hall and networking from 7:30-8:00pm.
About Sammetria:
Sammetria is an Attorney who focuses her practice on Art Law and Intellectual Property. Sammetria works with a wide range of art industry clients including artists, art agencies, collectors, consultants, cultural organizations, dealers, galleries, and independent curators. She also works with multi-hyphenate creatives in Fashion, Entertainment, Design, and the Nonprofit sector.
Sammetria holds a BBA in Marketing from the McCombs School of Business and a BA in Art History from the College of Fine Arts - both from The University of Texas at Austin. She’s also a proud graduate of Temple University Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia.
Sammetria loves talking about the intersection of law, art, and design. She’s a frequent lecturer on the topics of Art Law, and best business practices for Creatives, Artists, and Designers. She currently teaches an anti-starving artist course at UT Austin, College of Fine Arts. Sammetria was recently awarded an Arts Education Award from the Dallas Business Council for the Arts for her community arts education work. An article co-authored by Sammetria discussing Art and Private Investment will be published the second quarter of 2023. She is licensed to practice law in Texas and Pennsylvania.
