Erin K. Murphy is the Manager of Exhibitions and Assistant to the Chief Curator at the San Antonio Museum of Art, where over the past four years she has organized original modern and contemporary permanent collection exhibitions. Erin recently co-organized an exhibition of modern photography as well as a major exhibition of contemporary Australian Aboriginal art.

She previously served in positions at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Erin has published writing on artists John Chamberlain, James Rosenquist, and Willie Doherty, among others. Additionally, she has served as the editor and co-editor for several exhibition publications, most recently, Heaven and Hell: Salvation and Retribution in Pure Land Buddhism.

She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Texas A&M University and a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of North Texas with a focus on modern and contemporary art. Using Jean Baudrillard’s concept of the simulacrum as a framework, her Master’s thesis considered features of James Rosenquist’s studio practice to propose a new interpretation involving the representational status and significance of the artist’s collages and paintings.

Erin is a member of the Association of Art Museum Curators as well as the Board of Directors and Website Committee for the National Emerging Museum Professionals Network.
